Took elder grandson (Dennis) back home to Iowa yesterday, thanks to road-trip-lovin' friend, Jo Susan. She loves to drive, I love to navigate (not so crazy about driving), so we made the perfect pair of hiway mamas. DP came along this time, so we had a car full of passengers. I have always been able to count on Jo Susan through some of my family challenges and we love her for it and this was no exception. Dennis gave her a big hug before saying goodbye and told her how much she is loved and appreciated in this family.
On the way back home we three (Jo Susan, DP, and I) stopped for late lunch at the Cracker Barrel in Iowa. Their chairs are "comfortably large," now I know why. I ended up taking most of my meal home in a doggy box. All three of us had to laugh when the waitress asked if we wanted desert. We had stopped in Barnes & Noble for a book for DP while waiting for Dennis' dad to pick him up. DP read his book all of 25 to 30 minutes while on the road and played his video game for about an hour, then asked in a round about way, "Are we there yet?" The child was bored and I was stiff from sitting so long. I don't know how Jo Susan does it! But, the Hiway Mamas started singing and rocking to some old tunes from the "good old days" of the 60s and 70s. When Dennis was riding with us, he made it a point to insert headphones and crank up his iPod tunes to drown out the front seat frolic. Oh well.
We finally got home and settled in after about 8 hours drive time round trip, DP went straight to bed as did I and with the help of an Advil PM I was out for the night. Over-tired and off routine for the past week, getting a full night's sleep would have been impossible otherwise.
Today (Saturday) has been spent chillin' and cleanin'.
